A phobia is an irrational fear of a particular situation, creature, or thing. A significant number of us suffer from a fear or phobia of one type or another. For some of us it can be distressing, but we manage to tolerate it with considerable anxiety. For others it can be seriously debilitating, and extreme measures are often taken in order to avoid the trigger. A fear or phobia can lead to panic attacks and in severe cases can literally control our lives.
A fear or phobia begins with an initial traumatising event. When we experience subsequent exposure to the trigger, the fear is strengthened and more deeply entrenched in our subconscious. When this happens, even the act of thinking about our particular fear or phobia is enough to trigger a fight or flight response.
Hypnotherapy helps with fears and phobias by:
- identifying the initialising event
- removing your negative conditioned response to the trigger
- creating a new positive emotional response and pairing it with the trigger
- forging new neural pathways in the brain, freeing you from former negative responses to the trigger
